We’ve all heard the age old saying of You Are What You Eat… yet how many of us pay homage to that advice in today’s fast paced and time poor world? Convenience is often what we look for at the end of a busy day; unfortunately for us this doesn’t always equate to nutrient dense food.

For the last 7 years I have been afflicted with seborrhoeic dermatitis and after becoming fed up with the advice from my dermatologist (confined to use of steroid creams, anti-dandruff shampoos and courses of Isotane) I am now exploring a more holistic remedy for this skin condition.

Because dry, flaky skin isn’t a good look for someone in our profession right?!

So aside from the obvious prescription of my Dermalogica UltraCalming products and regular skin treatments with the Clinical Colloidal Oatmeal masque (which all do a fine job but are not designed to make this problem go away)… what more can I do?

How about a complete overhaul of my lifestyle, diet and nutrition?

That is currently the path that I am on and I have to say that discovering Dr Libby and her teachings has been somewhat of a revelation for me. After reading Rushing Women’s Syndrome I call tell you that I ticked way too many of the boxes in the Rushing Women’s quiz. And as there is a definite link between stress levels and seborrhoeic dermatitis I am now incorporating a little more diaphragmatic breathing in to my day!

Cutting out gluten and dairy are my next steps and thankfully Dr Libby provides many nutritious and delicious options in her recipe book the Real Food Kitchen. I love to collect recipe books and normally I just salivate over the pages and the complicated recipes. This cook book is so different. The meals are simple to prepare and I had no idea that healthy eating could taste so great. Every recipe I have tried has been a winner.

My most recent attempt has been the Vanilla Coconut Balls of Bliss. Made with almond meal and coconut, these nutrient dense balls of goodness are full of vitamins A, C and E and we all understand the benefits they deliver to our skin! You can see the marketing team pictured here enjoying them!

You have probably worked out by now that I am Dr Libby’s biggest fan… vying for a close second equal is Hayley (our Wellington Territory Sales Manager) and Michelle (Auckland based New Business Consultant). We LOVE Dr Libby round these parts and are super excited about seeing her present at our Future Skin Today Event on the 28th July. Speaking of which, spaces are booking up fast so make sure you get in touch to book your place if you haven’t already!

Coconut Balls of Bliss (Dr Libby, the Real Food Kitchen)

• 2 cups shredded coconut
• 1/3 cup coconut oil, in liquid form
• 1 cup almond meal
• 2 Tbsp honey
• 1 tsp vanilla paste
• Pinch of salt

1. Place all the ingredients in a food processor until well combined and sticky.
2. With wet hands, roll the mixture into bite sized balls. Store in fridge or freezer until required.

Tip: they don’t roll very easily as mixture is crumbly so squeeze them in to shape instead. Enjoy! (They taste like white chocolate according to the girls in the office!)
